Amsterdam is by far one of our favorite cities in the world. We love the fresh produce, the restaurants, the architecture, the people and just the overall laid back attitude. We’ve been here several times, and each visit we spend a least a month, it’s easily becoming our home away from home.
So when we stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, over the weekend, I found my new home. If I could live in this hotel, I would in a heartbeat. Maybe it’s the unassuming entrance, or the UNESCO protected private garden in the back, the historical richness of the property, or the amazing food being prepared in their restaurants; there is no exact reason why I love this property. It’s the combination of it all, that adds to our entire Amsterdam experience and makes us want to come back (quickly).
Aside from a flowing brown flag waving up above and the friendly concierge waiting to open the door for you, there is really no way to tell you have arrived at the Waldorf Astoria. The entire hotel is built from 6 historical palaces, which have been extensively renovated to create the elegant Waldorf Astoria you see now. You can expect to see well preserved grand staircases, beautiful carved ceilings and original restored art works adorning the walls. Although the space is pure sophistication, it’s incredibly relaxing and easy to feel right at home.
You'll quickly notice that the hotel has the most amazing scent lingering throughout. No matter if you're in your room, or walking through the halls, you will get delightful whiffs from the candles glowing all around. The smells come from renowned Parisian house, Cire Trudon. At check-in you an also choose your own fragrance to be sprayed in your room during turndown service, just to make you feel more at home - so lovely!
Amazing ambiance aside, the Waldorf Astoria is really all about location. Sitting pristinely on the Herengracht Canal (or the gentlemen’s canal), you are only a 15 minute walk to Dam Square as well as the famed Rijksmuseum. There are plenty of great local boutiques nearby, as well as a huge selection of international brands nearby in Dam Square or at De Bijenkorf. If you're looking for a place that is central to all the major attractions, yet comfortably away from the loud noise and crowds, the Waldorf Astoria is a perfect match.
In a sense, the Waldorf Astoria is like a perfectly curated museum. Housed in a historical (and beautiful) building and exuding timeless elegance; all of which unveils the true beauty of Amsterdam.
Nothing about the Waldorf Astoria is cookie cutter and certainly not their team. We received the highest level of service from a team who was genuinely excited to be there and offer their favorite recommendations and tips.
When we stepped into our suite, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the canal front views seen from the large windows, next to the bed. Looking outside, I could see the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam city life, as small boats slowly made their way down the canal. Our birds eye view of Amsterdam was definitely one of the best parts of our stay.
We were greeted with fresh flowers and a beautifully arranged fruit basket, a perfect welcome treat. Our room was a little bit small, but the amazing views made up for it. We had a little sitting area and desk space in front of our fantastic cloud-like bed.
Our bathroom was pretty large with a separate shower and bathtub and always seemed to be warm...a perfect haven after a long day of walking around in chilly temperatures. The bathroom came equipped with plush robes, a fantastic magnifying mirror and Salvatore Ferragamo products.
When we came back to our room after being out all day, we were greeted with the fresh scent we choose at check-in and a two glasses of whiskey - quite the perfect end to a long day.
When celebrated chef Sidney Schutte's came to the hotel, he had one rule - he had to run it all. Being in charge of one restaurant (especially one with 2 Michelin stars) can be a full time job, but being in charge of all the food in a 93 suite hotel is a feat in itself. Yet the result is consistent, delicious and creative cuisine being served to all guests, no matter where they dine. So whether you have a coveted reservation at Librije's Zusje, recently awarded 2 stars, or the elegant yet comfortable Goldfinch Brassiere and of course room service, you will be fed very very very well.
During our stay we had the chefs tasting menu at Goldfinch Brasserie, which was the perfect end to a full day of exploring Amsterdam. We were served an array of savory dishes all of which had a hint of Asian influence. Think perfectly cooked duck breast glazed with honey and 5 spices, or something a big lighter like Thai tom yum soup with fresh kaffir lime leaves. I would have to say my favorite dishes were dessert, one serving was a sweet Waldorf salad, (definitely not what it sounds like) and the other was coconut ice cream with lychee, lime, crispy rice topped with peanuts and cacao - so satisfying!
