From deconstructed Béarnaise Sauce to Spruce flavored ice-cream, The Fish Company in Reykjavik is reinventing traditional Icelandic food and it's damn good!
Fiskfélagið, or as it's known to those who don't speak Icelandic -- The Fish Company, is a casual yet intimate restaurant in the heart of downtown Reykjavik. Candle lit tables reveal a series of characterful and quirky pieces of art which remain faithful to the restaurants sense of creativity. From a glowing moose head, to a beautiful wood carving depicting daily life (complete with Kama Sutra scenes), the decor is fun and quirky, while the ambiance is relaxed and unpretentious.
The Fish Company does not just push culinary boundaries, it completely breaks them (pine needle ice cream anyone?!). By taking historic dishes from Iceland and deconstructing them, the Fish Company remains true to regional traditions, while giving each dish a thoroughly modern twist.
Their “Around Iceland” tasting menu is the best way to experience traditional dishes from around the island and to get a sense of what it’s like to truly reshape traditional cuisine. A tasting menu experience at the Fish company will start with a canapé of the chefs choosing followed by deconstructed popular dishes from various areas throughout Iceland or the world - depending on which menu you choose.
The Fish Company Tasting Menu
Whether it’s their filet of cod with shrimp, apple slices and celery carpaccio, in dill mayonnaise and apple vinaigrette — or salmon with egg yolk cream, pickled onions and fennel salad with estragon foam, their dishes are modern, skillfully prepared and most importantly, absolutely delicious. Our standout favorite from the tasting menu however, was the desert; a soft spruce spongecake and Icelandic skyr sorbet with salted caramel & whey cream, with lemon meringue & oatmeal crumble all delicately topped with spruce “snow”. The whole dinner was full of unique flavors, and a different taste with each bite.
At The Fish Company they have an acute understanding of flavor, for which the restaurant is renowned – even down to the bread, which comes with the restaurant’s signature home-made lava salt butter.
