Travel in Thailand: Top 5 Destinations You Must See

From the beaches of Koh Phi Phi, to the chaos of Bangkok, alongside the culture, jungles and history, there is just so much to see in Thailand

There is no question about it, Thailand is one of our absolute favorite countries to visit. If you’re looking for somewhere tropical, relaxed and has amazing food, you'll find it hard to pick somewhere more idyllic and relaxed. Whether you are staying in a tranquil Thailand beach villa, or a hotel suite in a high rise Bangkok hotel, there are possibilities that will please everyone. The country is home to a variety to landscapes and climates, and it does each one exceeding well.

You can find crystal clear blue waters and blinding white sand running around the edge of places like Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, just two of its many spectacular islands - trust me, these beaches need to been seen to be believed. If you want something different you can experience the bustling chaos of Bangkok, or alternatively climb up into the cooler mountains in the north. Here you will find peaceful jungles, rich spirituality and picturesque views. Wherever you go, you will find yourself charmed by the ancient and mysterious culture, the delicious food and the welcoming locals.

We have been to Thailand a few times now, and have pretty much created a routine for ourselves. We usually fly into Bangkok and stay for a few days. After that, it is off to a dreamy beach getaway on one of the many islands. With so much to offer it can be hard to narrow things down. With that in mind, here are our top five destinations in Thailand that you have to visit.

Whenever we decide to choose a tropical destination for our next adventure, Thailand is the first place that comes to mind.

Bangkok

Thailand’s busy capital can be intimidating at first. It is a hive of activity and its chaos is all part of its charm. The sights, sounds and smells that assault your senses will inspire your curiosity, while each street will bring something new and alien to try to understand. It makes the perfect introduction to the country and South East Asia as a whole.

Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, and also one of its most popular. You will undoubtedly find it a peaceful place to relax after the commotion of Bangkok, but it is certainly no backwater either. The island’s staggering natural beauty is enhanced by a developed tourist economy including some of Luxury Resort’s best properties. It is pretty much guaranteed that you will find everything you need to enjoy your time there. If you want to party head to Patong, if you are looking for something upmarket then try Surin, and if you just want some peace and quiet then Nai Thon is the place for you. Whatever you chose, the atmosphere of the island will soon get under your skin.

Koh Phi Phi

The name Koh Phi Phi refers to an archipelago of islands – and to the two largest in particular. It is a much smaller place than some of Thailand’s other beach destinations, meaning that if you are not looking for a party it is a great option. There are plenty of attractions in Koh Phi Phi, but for us the main one is the diving. The waters here teem with colorful fish, as well as coral reefs and turtles and the landscape is so unique with little islands popping up everywhere.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most well established island resorts, and it is popular with everyone from backpackers, TEFL teachers and stag parties, to rich and discerning travelers looking for 5-star luxury. Just like all the other islands in this country, it has unreal beaches fringed with swaying palm trees, and these are Koh Samui’s main attraction. There are also opportunities to get to know the local culture on the island, with the Big Buddha at Ko Phan monastery being a great place to start. There are a myriad of places to stay on the island, and Luxury Retreats offer some of the best villas in Koh Samui.

Chiang Mai

If you finally decide you have had enough of the beach, head up to Chiang Mai to see a completely different side of the country. The city is the capital of the mountainous northern region, and it is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to see what the area has to offer. Jungle walks, mysterious hill tribes and ancient temples are just some of the things to do around Chiang Mai. Elephant rides are a popular activity here, although the practice is sometime ethically questionable. We love visiting the elephant sanctuaries, which allow visitors to appreciate these magnificent creatures while providing them with a safe and loving environment at the same time.

Luxury Retreats

Thailand’s beauty is best enjoyed from accommodation which matches the quality of the country’s destinations and gives you a comfortable place to relax and enjoy.  Luxury Retreats portfolio of opulent villas extends across the globe, and their collection in Thailand is particularly impressive. Each partner villa is heavily vetted before it can join the network, and booking through them not only gives you access to spectacular properties, but also to their support services. These include 24/7 concierges and assistance in finding the perfect villa. If you want to stay in a private villa during your stay in Thailand, we wholeheartedly recommend having a look at Luxury Retreats. They can help you to make a magical place even more special.
