Our butler on the Crystal Serenity was called Alfredo, and he came by the suite at four every afternoon with our favorite snacks. When I got seasick on a day at sea, he turned up with ginger pills, medicine, and a fridge restocked with ginger ale and sparkling water.
The route ran ten days from Vancouver to Anchorage through the Inside Passage. A seaplane over the 2.2 million acres of the Misty Fjords left me teary; a bear-searching tour out of Hoonah turned up two. Not all of it worked. The helicopter lands on Mendenhall Glacier and then keeps you standing in a small circle while the guides try to entertain you. Dinner in the main dining room is either 6:00 or 8:30, so you pick one and live with it. Book a balcony. You can watch a 300-foot wall of aqua-blue ice go past at Hubbard Glacier without fighting the crowd at the bow.
