El Yunque is the only rainforest in the entire United States, a short drive from San Juan, Puerto Rico. We swapped a beach day for hiking and playing in waterfalls instead. That’s the pattern for our best US trips — they didn’t feel like typical American travel at all. Alyeska Resort in Alaska changed how we thought about the state entirely. We grew up picturing snowdrifts and skiing, went looking for bears, and came back with a completely different idea of what’s actually there.

The Ritz-Carlton, San Juan is technically still the United States, but it didn’t feel like it — explosive color, upbeat music, fresh rum cocktails. It was easy to forget we hadn’t left the country. And EAST Miami, in Brickell City Centre, was our second stay with the EAST brand after we first found them in Beijing. It’s close enough to Wynwood, the Design District and South Beach to use as a base for all three.
