Playa del Carmen and Cancun have a party reputation that isn’t really our style — all-inclusive buffets, drinks made without top-shelf liquor. The Thompson Hotel is the alternative to that: real cocktails, real style, without the resort-buffet feel. The Viceroy Riviera Maya, about an hour from Cancun, was actually the destination we chose for our own wedding before we’d even started traveling full-time — so going back had a layer of nostalgia to it beyond the hotel itself.
