Interlaken is a quaint and quirky town and we wanted a quaint and quirky hotel to match. We came across the Hotel Bellevue website and just by the fun demeanor and art nouveau look, we knew we wanted to stay there. The charming ambiance and beautiful art had us sold, not to mention it was right in the center of town.

As soon as you walk into the hotel your greeted by a floor to ceiling mural featuring bright floral and animal motifs, that just sets the tone of the ambiance. The art was created by textile artist Jakob Schlaepfer who is known for his bright unique designs that can be transformed onto an array of materials.  Throughout the hotel and rooms more of his art is displayed, which real gives a modern touch to an otherwise traditional hotel. If you look a bit closer you start to notice details reminiscent of a belle époque era and much older, more historic hotel. The tiles in the lobby are original and the shining chandeliers add that whimsical touch. You can’t help but fall in love.

Hotel Bellevue is located on the bank of the river Aare river on the foot of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, making this a perfect destination for skiers or those just looking for a vacation in the Alps. Many of the rooms have balconies that overlook the river and give endless views of the mountains in the disntace. Our room was small yet very comfortable to come home to at night. With a small desk and comfortable chairs we were even able to work for a bit.

After talking a bit to the gracious team, we learned that Hotel Bellevue has quite the history. It started operating as a hotel in 1801 and has obviously gone through many changes over the years. In 2001 it landed in the hands of the current owners (a delightful husband and wife team) and became a passion project of theirs.

They worked tirelessly over the years making changes and renovations, but it wasn’t until 2012 that they were truly able to make it into the hotel they had envisioned. Forgoing the typical boring furniture and decor you find at plenty of hotels, they searched until they found the perfect pieces to fit inside their historic quirky hotel.

When we planned our trip to Interlaken we banked on the idea that there would be snow and plenty of it. We had plans to go skiing, get in snow fights and just enjoy the beaty of a snowy Swtizerland. Unfortunatly this didn’t happen as Interlaken was experiencing an odd no snow climate. There was no need for parkas, snow boats and sadly all our activities got canceled.

We were so excited to find out that Hotel Bellevue had bikes that we could use. Interlaken is one of the most photogenic places we’ve been and luckily the town is somewhat flat. We had an amazing day riding around the lakes, the towns and pretty much tried to get lost. Each view was better than the previous and it really felt like we were able to grasp this town a little more.
