Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu: Italian Luxury in Sardinia

Set inside a private marina, this laid-back luxury hotel is just a mile from Porto Cervo making it a great base to explore Northern Sardinia

Pulling up to the Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu, we couldn't help but feel as if we were entering the glamorous side Sardinia. White washed walls filled the marina, bougainvillaea trees acted as bright design pieces and very expensive sports cars were parked neatly at the entrance. The hotel was hidden, yet beautifully situated right on the waters edge...trust us, sunsets here were incredible ;) Poltu Quatu does an incredible job of embracing Sardinia’s natural beauty and creating an intimate oasis for you to enjoy during your stay.

As some of their extensive amenities are seasonal, it’s recommended that you research the best time to visit. For example, summers are their busy season so everything is available; whereas the earlier months of the year tend to be a bit cooler and less populated, so you’ll find many restaurants and activities closed.  But, whether you want to escape the colder weather, need a break from the daily grind, or want to recenter yourself in a peaceful environment, the Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu won’t disappoint.

The hotel’s centerpiece and focal point is a large pool, surrounded by cascading waterfalls and small bridges connecting to and from neighboring pools. Pops of hot pink stand out amongst the icy blue pool from the Bougainvillea trees and the white suites throughout. Terracotta tiled floors and rooftops add an earthy contrast to the views and with so many open spaces, it’s easy to get lost in relaxing. Although the hotel is in a stunning location and set up for relaxation, there are few things that could use some updating, so take notice if you’re looking for a brand new, or modern type of hotel. Overall, this is  a beautiful hotel that captures the essence of the luxury Sardinian lifestyle and the hospitality of the Italians who populate the area.

The Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu offers a variety of different rooms, suites and apartments, each with their own unique view and amenities. The rooms could use a bit of a face lift, but you’ll still get that laid back beach vibe in a beautiful location. They feature neutral beach tone furniture, white bedding, terra cotta floors and pops of the Italian charm you’d expect to find here...like wine if your room :) If you’re traveling with your family or prefer more space, they offer 66 apartments on the property, as well. These suites come complete with a kitchen, dining room and living room, only made better by views of the emerald mountains and blue sea.

The rooms are spacious enough to accommodate kids and the hotel offers cribs for the children if you need one, which can easily fit in the living room of a one bedroom suite to give you some privacy. Or, if you’re traveling with friends or family, a two-room suite with separate bedrooms provides a perfect amount of space to sleep everyone comfortably without feeling like you’re on top of each other all the time. During our trip we stayed in a 1 bedroom suite and easily converted the living room into Axel's room. We had a balcony overlooking the marina and found ourselves perched here in the early evenings with a bottle of wine... perfection!  This hotel has so many different varieties of rooms and accommodations, so it won’t be a challenge to find one that suits you.

Located inside the Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu, Maymon restaurant dishes up contemporary Mediterranean fare with a hint of Sardinian and Asian influence. Their food is delicious and fresh, served in a romantic seaview atmosphere, as the restaurant is located overlooking the water. Their anchovy pasta is not to be missed, which combines rich creamy pasta with a finishing of finely grated dried anchovies. It was amazing! And this is coming from a person (me) who hates anchovies.

The restaurant also hosts morning breakfast, which was delicious.  They had a huge buffet of everything we could want (fresh fruits, made to order omelettes, sparkling wine and so much more) On the morning we were leaving, we had a very early flight, but the manager of the restaurant opened a bit earlier for us, so that we could grab some breakfast before we set off!

There’s also Tanit Restaurant, which showcases fine fish and meat dishes (with a stunning view to boot), and the Pool Ishter, which serves light snacks to pool goers at any time of day.

Another point to note is that it’s most convenient to rent a car if you’re planning on staying at The Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu. This makes it easier to navigate around the city, scope out different beaches and hot spots, and explore all that the posh Porto Cervo has to offer.

The hotel itself offers plenty to do, as well. Their fully-equipped beauty centre boasts a variety of treatments for your body, face, and hair, which comes complete with various products you can take home. If you’re not one to miss a beat, Heaven Sporting Club is their premier fitness centre that features 250 square meters of space to workout. Here, they offer everything from indoor cycling to private personalized workout lessons. The hotel also offers something for the active guest, including tennis courts and soccer fields where you can play a match and even get private lessons. If you’re in the mood to unwind and relax, simply grab a cocktail and a bite to eat at their pool and sunbathe on the deck which is surrounded by rocks.

The Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu is a great option for someone who wants to visit the enchanting Sardinian coast, but in a quieter, more relaxed environment. It’s close to Porto Cervo, so there’s plenty to see and do without compromising the relaxing vacation element.
